History
The story of Nesmith Library is one of growth, community, and a deep commitment to knowledge. Our origins trace back to the generosity of Col. Thomas Nesmith, whose support helped establish the library collection. For many years, the library was housed in Windham’s Town Hall until 1899, when George W. Armstrong funded the construction of a beautiful fieldstone building to serve as the library’s new home.

The Armstrong Building’s original Reading Room, later used as the Reference Room, was a cherished space for generations of readers. By 1978, the library expanded with an addition to accommodate the growing Children’s collection and provide space for activities.
However, by the late 1990s, Nesmith Library was bursting at the seams. With over 34,000 items, a thriving Children’s program, and an ever-growing demand for research materials and recreational reading, space became a challenge. The Children’s Room addition was filled to capacity, leaving little room for events.
Longtime Windham residents still recall the charm of the Nesmith Library’s days in the Armstrong Memorial Building. But as the town grew, so did the need for a larger library. After years of planning, the community came together, and in 1996, voters approved the construction of a new building. On August 28, 1997, the current Nesmith Library opened its doors, ready to serve Windham’s evolving needs.

Today, as Windham continues to grow, the Nesmith Library remains at the heart of the community, providing access to materials, technology, and programs beyond what was once imagined. Our Trustees and staff are committed to supporting the informational, educational, cultural, and recreational needs of Windham residents—now and for generations to come.
