September is Library Card Sign Up Month, a national celebration of the power of the library card, promoted by the American Library Association! Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning. Please note that children signing up for a Nesmith Library card need to be at least five years old, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to sign up with them.
This year, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” characters Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Bo Peep and friends are going on an adventure as Honorary Chairs of Library Card Sign-Up Month. In their role, they will promote the value of a library card and bring attention to the many ways libraries transform lives and communities.
Adults are invited to enter the #GetLibraryCarded challenge for a chance to win a $100 Visa Gift Card! Take a picture of yourself with your library card and use #GetLibraryCarded when you post the picture on Instagram or Twitter to enter. Entries can also be submitted by posting as a comment or wall post on the I Love Libraries Facebook page. Please visit Social Media/Emerging Technology Librarian Chelsea at the library for drop in tech help if you would like help taking and sharing a photo for this promotion!
Some guidelines: It is best to show the decorative front of your library card in the picture, rather than sharing your actual library card number on the back. The promotion begins Sunday, September 1, and ends Sunday, September 22. All library lovers and librarians are encouraged to participate.
